Anxiety
Stress and anxiety are normal parts of life. But when anxiety is unrelenting, or it doesn’t seem to have a particular cause, it can take over your life.
Perhaps your mind races, you ruminate about problems on a loop that don’t lead to solutions, you avoid situations and events because of anxiety or your sleep is negatively affected. Maybe things get to a level where physical sensations are so concerning you go to the emergency room to rule out a heart attack or other serious health issues.
I’ve worked with many people, including health professionals, who had a hard time believing that anxiety alone could cause the level of physical suffering it does until it happened to them.
I have experience treating anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and phobias using the following modalities:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will help you to recognize and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to anxiety.
- Exposure Therapy involves gradually facing things that trigger anxiety in a safe environment. The goal is to reduce fear over time.
- Breathing Exercises and Relaxation Techniques that help calm the mind and body.
- Mindfulness training is a practice that encourages focusing on the present moment, reducing anxious thoughts about the past or future.
The techniques to manage anxiety are relatively simple yet not always easy to practice. If you have tried various “tips and tricks” and failed, you are in good company.
Sometimes there is unresolved trauma beneath anxiety, in which case we can engage other modalities. But sometimes it’s simply that modalities have not been customized to you well enough so they’re easy to do and appealing enough to practice.
Together we will build a tool box of interventions that work well for you. You will typically leave treatment with three to five interventions you know are reliable and effective. When these interventions are practiced regularly you will be able to be present for the good things that life has to offer.
